Two floors of No.1 Royal Crescent – both the main house and the newly-restored domestic wing – are accessible via a lift. In order to protect the furniture and displays from damage mobility scooters are not allowed in No.1. Manual wheelchairs are permitted. Our room guides are all trained to assist visitors with accessing our collections, so please let them know if extra help is needed.
Blue Badge holders are able to park directly outside No.1 Royal Crescent.
An adapted WC is located adjacent to the lift on the ground floor.

Lifts and access to Museum
The Museum is divided into two areas, No. 1 Royal Crescent (the historic house) and the Servants’ wing next door.
There are two routes around the museum, one of which is step free. The step free route includes the ground and basement floors of the main house and the ground and first floors of the Servants’ wing. This route gives step free access to the Information Room, the Dining room, the Parlour, the Gentleman’s Retreat, the Housekeeper’s Room,the Servants’ Hall, the circulatory spaces, both above and below stairs and the Shop. It also gives access to the Andrew Brownsword Gallery where temporary exhibitions may be held.
There is one accessible lift and it is located behind the ticket desk accessed via a ramp with a 1:12 gradient. This ramp has 2 handrails.
This is located in the Basement and can be reached via the accessible lift or by descending 11 steps beyond the ticket desk.
Baby Changing Facilities
These are situated in the Ground Floor toilet which is located beyond the ticket desk and the accessible lift. This toilet is not accessible to wheelchairs.
Seating is provided in the following areas:
- Ground Floor: Information Room, by the Grand Staircase, in the Gentleman’s Retreat
- First Floor: Outside the Lady’s Bedchamber, in the Andrew Brownsword Gallery
- Second Floor: On the landing by the Grand Staircase
- Basement: In the Courtyard
Please note, the majority of these seats are benches without arm supports.
Borrow a Wheelchair
Visitors can borrow a wheelchair if required. Please note there is only one wheelchair available to borrow and so booking is advisable. Please telephone in advance to book it on 01225 428126 or ask at the ticket desk on arrival.

No. 1 Royal Crescent is an historic building. Some of the floors are uneven. The flooring in the Basement and the Courtyard is flagstones. The Back Stairs are very steep and narrow. The Grand Staircase can be used to access all floors in the main part of the house except the Basement. The Basement can be reached via the accessible lift or by a short set of 11 stairs located behind the ticket desk, in the main entrance area.
