In this illustrated talk, food historian Dr Annie Gray will bring to life the kitchens of Georgian England, to form part of our lecture series celebrating 100 years of women’s suffrage. We all know that the Victorians invented much of our modern Christmas – from Santa to stockings and all that shopping fatigue. But there was life before Prince Albert, and in this Christmas-themed lecture Annie Gray will unveil the glories of the Georgian yule. From drunken debauchery, to cosy Christmas cooking, she’ll lead us upstairs and downstairs, finishing with a flourish at Christmas dinner itself. You may even pick up some tips for your own Christmas tables.
Dr Annie Gray is a writer, academic, broadcaster and consultant. Specialising in British food history c.1650-1950, she’s just published her first book, The Greedy Queen: Eating with Victoria, and is currently working on a follow-up. She’s the resident food historian on BBC Radio 4’s The Kitchen Cabinet, and recently presented Victorian Bakers (BBC2) and The Sweetmakers (BBC2), the latter partly filmed in Bath (including the dining room at No. 1 Royal Crescent).
