The Withdrawing Room
Elegant, light and feminine, this room was the height of fashion and taste. The ladies took tea here after withdrawing from dinner.
– Tea was expensive and the hostess locked the TEA CADDY to keep contents safe from servants.
– The single manual HARPSICHORD was made in 1770 by the great harpsichord-maker Jacob Kirkman of Alsace (1710-1792).
– The portrait of MARY DELANY by John Opie (1761-1807) depicts one of the most celebrated women of the 18th century. A shining example of polite behaviour, she was a letter-writer, a gifted craftswoman and a confidante to royalty.
